Figure Skating Academy

The Figure Skating Academy is a tradition at the Winter Club. Figure skaters will advance from Learn to Skate to the Figure Skating Academy. Skaters will progress through the Basic 1 through freeskate levels as outlined by the US Figure Skating association.

Ages

Skaters of any age are allowed to participate in the Figure Skating Academy. Skaters that are completely new to skating will need to complete the Learn to Skate program at the Winter Club before enrolling in the Figure Skating Academy.

When

The Figure Skating Academy will hold sessions at the Winter Club starting after Thanksgiving and running Thursday afternoons from 4:30-5:15pm and Sunday mornings from 9:15-10:00am until March 5th.

Where

All Figure Skating Academy sessions will take place at the Winter Club on the Studio or Main rink.

Sessions

Sessions are offered twice a week; Thursday's at 4:30-5:15pm and/or Sunday's 9:15-10:00am.

Basic 1

-Sit on ice and stand up

-March Forward across ice

-Forward two-foot glide

-Dip

-Forward swizzles, 6-8 in a row

-Backwards wiggles, 6-8 in a row

-Snowplow stop

-Rocking horse, 2-3

-Two-foot hop in place

Basic 2

-Forward one foot glides, Right and Left

-Backward two-foot glide

-Backward swizzles, 6-8 in a row

-Two foot turn from forward to backward in place

-Moving snowplow stop

-Forward alternating half-swizzle pumps, in a straight line (Slalom-like pattern)

Basic 3

-Forward stroking, showing correct use of blade

-Forward half swizzle pumps on a circle, 6-8 consecutive clockwise and counterclockwise

-Moving forward to backward two-foot turn, clockwise and counterclockwise

-Backward one-foot glides, R and L

-Forward slalom

-Two-foot spin, up to two revolutions

Basic 4

-Forward outside edge on a circle, Right and Left

-Forward inside edge on a circle, Right and Left

-Forward crossovers, clockwise and counterclockwise

-Forward outside three-turn, Right and Left from a stand-still position

-Backward half swizzle pumps on a circle, clockwise and counterclockwise

-Backward stroking

-Backward snowplow stop Right and Left

Basic 5

~ Backward outside edge on a circle – R and L 

~ Backward inside edge on a circle – R and L 

~ Backward crossovers, clockwise and counterclockwise 

~ Beginning one-foot spin – up to three revs, optional entry and free-foot position 

~ Hockey stop 

~ Side toe hop – both directions

Basic 6

~ Forward inside three-turn – R and L from a standstill position 

~ Moving backward to forward two foot turn on a circle, clockwise and counterclockwise 

~ T-stop – R or L 

~ Bunny hop 

~ Forward spiral on a straight line – R or L 

~ Forward lunge – R or L

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are the conditions to cancel a session at the Winter Club?

A: Temperature below minus 10 with wind chill or the ice surface being unusable due to rain or warm temperatures.

Basic 1-6 (2023-2024)

WC Figure Skating Academy, Basic 1-6 will have two on-ice sessions per week at the Winter Club starting the Thursday after Thanksgiving and running until March 5th; Thursday sessions will be from 4:30-5:15pm and Sunday's 9:15-10:00am. 

Evaluations will be conducted during the first ice session to properly place skaters in a Basic's class designation, or freeskate class if applicable. Please contact the WC Figure Skating Director, Denean Gorman, dmgorman3@gmail.com if you have further questions
